We thank Torrey for doing this interview with Equal Opportunities for Students! She is a part of the Tell Your Story series.
She made a very good point in her interviews about teachers, and teacher pay. Schools and districts that have more money can afford to pay teachers higher salaries. High quality teachers are very much in demand, and deserve the salaries they earn for doing such a difficult and time consuming job. However, this does come with a cost. When districts and schools with little money have to compete with districts and schools with more resources, the higher quality teachers end up working in the schools with higher funding. While no one can blame teachers for taking the most compensation they can get for the tremendous work they do, this system typically leads the kids who are most in need, unable to get access to the best teachers. What can we do to incentivise teachers to go to lower performing schools? Is there a way to better balance funding across school districts?
